How to Choose a Plasma Cutter

1. Output amperage determines cut capacity

Powermax30 (30A): up to 5/8" recommended cut, 7/8" max. Powermax45 (45A): up to 3/4" recommended, 1" max. Powermax65 (65A): up to 1-1/2" recommended. Powermax105 (105A): up to 1-1/4" at production speed, 1-3/4" max. Match the cutter to your most common material thickness.

2. Hand torch vs machine torch

Hand torches suit manual cutting. Machine torches (straight body, no trigger) are designed for CNC plasma table use. Hypertherm offers both — specify when ordering.

3. Air supply requirements

Plasma cutters require clean, dry compressed air. Smaller units (Powermax30-45) work with most shop compressors (4-6 CFM at 90-100 PSI). Larger units require higher CFM — check the spec sheet for your model.

4. SYNC vs standard consumables

Hypertherm Powermax SYNC models use a single cartridge consumable that replaces 5 separate parts. Faster changes, less waste, better consistency. Powermax45 XP and newer models support SYNC cartridges.
