How to Choose an Engine Drive Welder

1. Weld output vs generator output

Engine drives provide both welding current and 120/240V generator power. Specify both requirements: e.g. 300A weld output + 10,500W generator for tools and lighting.

2. Gas vs diesel engine

Gas engines (most Lincoln Ranger and Miller Bobcat models) suit standard jobsite use. Diesel engine drives (Lincoln Ranger 305D, Miller Big Blue 350D) suit remote sites with diesel fuel infrastructure and provide better fuel efficiency for extended operation.

3. Processes supported

Stick and DC TIG are standard. Some engine drives support MIG with an optional wire feeder. Verify the output characteristics for the processes you need.

Buying Tip

Pro tip: For contractors who primarily weld on construction sites with shore power available, a Multimatic 255 plus a separate generator is often more cost-effective than a single engine drive. Choose an engine drive when you regularly work in locations with no power access.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Lincoln Ranger 305D diesel and Miller Big Blue 350D are the most widely used engine drives for pipeline welding. Both provide DC output suitable for E6010 root pass and E7018 fill and cap, with 300-350A output and reliable diesel engines. For gas engine options, the Lincoln Ranger 260MPX and Miller Trailblazer 325 are common in structural field welding.
